چکیده

We have designed and implemented a system that permits the measurement of network Quality of Service (QoS) parameters. This system allows us to objectively evaluate the requirements of network applications for delivering user acceptable quality. We use FastEthernet taps to monitor full-duplex traffic and programmable network interface cards to extract all the information needed to compute the network QoS parameters: latency, jitter, packet loss and throughput. The measurement system makes use of a global clock to synchronize the time measurements in different points of the network. We have employed this system to evaluate the performance of several network devices and study the behaviour of real network applications, such as file transfer and voice over IP. For these applications user perceived quality (UPQ) metrics have been defined in order to assess their QoS requirements. Since we measure simultaneously network QoS and application UPQ, we are able to correlate them. Determining application requirements has two main uses: (i) to predict UPQ for an application running over a given network based on the corresponding measured QoS parameters and understand the causes of application failure; (ii) to design/configure networks that provide the necessary conditions so that an application will run with a desired UPQ level.

Providing a Multidimensional Measurement Model for Assessing Mobile Telecommunication Service Quality (MS-Qual)

Because of the need to develop specific measurement scales for different services industries, this study aimed to empirically develop a reliable and valid model specifically for measuring mobile telecommunication service quality. A multidimensional measurement model (MS-Qual) has been proposed based on an extensive literature review and then, to assess the model validity, convergent and discrim...

Efficiency evaluation of wheat farming: a network data envelopment analysis approach

Traditional data envelopment analysis (DEA) models deal with measurement of relative efficiency of decision making units (DMUs) in which multiple-inputs consumed to produce multiple-outputs. One of the drawbacks of these models is neglecting internal processes of each system, which may have intermediate products and/or independent inputs and/or outputs. In this paper some methods which are usab...

Internet network design for quality of service guarantee using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA)

By developing the new services such as VoIP and Videoconference, using a mechanism is needed to support the quality of service of the application programs. Different models have been presented to guarantee the quality of service. Among these, the differentiated services can be mentioned which was presented by IETF. In the architecture of the differentiated services, no admission control mechani...

QoS Evaluation of Heterogeneous Networks: Application-based Approach

In this paper, an application-based QoS evaluation approach for heterogeneous networks is proposed. It is possible to expand the network capacity and coverage in a dynamic fashion by applying heterogeneous wireless network architecture. However, the Quality of Service (QoS) evaluation of this type of network architecture is very challenging due to the presence of different communication technolo...

A Novel Fuzzy Logic Base Scheduling Mechanism for Service Differentiation in IP Networks

Quality of Service (QoS) refers to a set of rules or techniques that help the network administrators use the available network resources optimally to manage the effects of congestion and to treat the applications according to their needs. The differentiated services architecture (DiffServ) allows providing quality of service to users. The major DiffServ premise is that individual flows with sim...
